■ Japan Children's Day 2016 - Report ↓ On Saturday 7th May, the Consulate General of Japan in Edinburgh held the Japan Children’s Day, reaching its third time, at St Mary’s Cathedral. The event was associated with the Japanese national holiday (Children’s Day), and a lot of children and their parents tried various activities such as origami, calligraphy and Japanese traditional clothes wearing offered at the booths. One of the popular attractions was Japanese food samples (rice balls, pork miso soup, and rice cake) where people enjoyed freshly made traditional food during the lunch time. The event included the award ceremony in which the winners of the “Picture Japan” and “Big in Japan” Children's Drawing Competition (a Japan-related drawing competition for primary and secondary school pupils in Scotland), whose works were selected out of nearly 180 drawings, were presented with their prizes. Before and after the award ceremony, there were also some other stage performances including Kimono and Karate demonstrations and Japanese songs presented by a local chorus group as well as children from the Scotland Japanese School. The event has marked as a great success with full of children’s smile thanks to the generous support from volunteers.
